Champions League Matchday 2: Mbappé Makes History as PSG Stun City
Record-breaking Matchday 2: Mbappé enters the UCL all-time top five, Real Madrid steal it late in Rome, and PSG put four past Manchester City.

Champions League Matchday 2 did not ease anyone in gently. Across Tuesday and Wednesday the league phase produced 78 goals — the most on a regular Champions League matchday on record — and the headlines stacked up almost as fast as the scorelines.
Kylian Mbappé used his 100th Champions League appearance to climb into the competition’s all-time top five scorers. Real Madrid still needed a stoppage-time winner in Rome. Paris Saint-Germain put four past Manchester City at the Etihad. Bodø/Glimt beat Borussia Dortmund in the Arctic. Shakhtar Donetsk turned Stamford Bridge into a home win. And that was only the half of it.
Live standings, full fixtures and the rest of the league-phase calendar sit on our Champions League betting hub. What follows is the long read: the night Mbappé rewrote the charts, the matches that defined the round, and every other Matchday 2 result.
Mbappé joins the Champions League all-time top five
On his 100th Champions League outing, Real Madrid’s Kylian Mbappé scored the goal that moved him past Raúl and into sole fifth on the competition’s all-time scoring list.
The strike came in Real’s 4-3 win away at Roma — his 72nd Champions League goal, across spells with Monaco, Paris Saint-Germain and Madrid. Raúl’s club legend total of 71 is now behind him.
He scored it in the first half, equalising after Mario Hermoso’s mistake. Mbappé intercepted roughly 23 metres from goal, shot, and watched a slight deflection off Roma captain Gianluca Mancini carry the ball into the net.
Champions League all-time top scorers
| Rank | Player | Goals |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Cristiano Ronaldo | 140 |
| 2 | Lionel Messi | 129 |
| 3 | Robert Lewandowski | 109 |
| 4 | Karim Benzema | 90 |
| 5 | Kylian Mbappé | 72 |
The same night delivered a second line for the history books. Mbappé reached 100 Champions League appearances at 27 years and 298 days — the youngest player ever to do so. Lionel Messi’s previous mark stood at 28 years and 84 days. Both men hit their century in away games against Roma.
Across those first 100 Champions League matches, Mbappé’s contribution is exactly 100 goal involvements: 72 goals and 28 assists.

José Mourinho’s return to Rome looked set to turn sour. Roma led 3-1 deep into the second half. Madrid still left with three points.
Roma started on the front foot. On 20 minutes Marten de Roon struck from outside the box; a deflection wrong-footed Thibaut Courtois. Five minutes later Mbappé levelled, rolling Hermoso and finding the net from range on the night of his Champions League century.
After the break Roma went again. Donyell Malen restored the lead on 51 minutes, then completed his brace six minutes later to make it 3-1. Gasperini’s side looked in control. Mourinho’s response was decisive: Vinícius came off for Endrick, Dumfries for Güler.
Then the final seven minutes flipped the match. Espí tapped in after Gollini had saved Endrick’s header (83'). Endrick headed Güler’s corner home for 3-3 (85'). In the 90th minute another Güler delivery found Rüdiger, who finished from close range. Madrid 4-3.
Mourinho: “Roma were dead in the last 20 minutes”
Afterwards Mourinho framed it as two games in one.
“Two matches in one. Roma were better in every metric, and then came 20 minutes when Real Madrid were simply impossible to stop.
They surprised us early by putting Soulé out wide: he created overloads and was extremely hard to contain.
In the second half we were more organised, but we conceded a cheap second goal. At 3-1 the game was effectively over — but Roma’s players were also spent. Playing with that style and that intensity is hard work. They were dead at the end of the game.
We made a few changes, and even if we had conceded a fourth it would not have changed anything. The opponents lacked the tactical and physical readiness.
When I was asked in the summer whether Roma could sign Endrick, I said: ‘Impossible.’ I know what he can do. Poor Hermoso — we basically destroyed him, making him deal with Diomande for 70 minutes. Koulierakis, who came on later, the same.”
Next up for Real: Sevilla in La Liga, then RB Leipzig at home in Matchday 3.

Premier League noise around Manchester City can wait for the weekend. Midweek at the Etihad, the reigning Champions League holders were the story — and Luis Enrique’s Paris Saint-Germain left Manchester with a statement win.
PSG tried to set the tone early on foreign soil, but the first clear chances came from City set pieces: Rúben Dias forced a save from a free-kick delivery, then the visiting goalkeeper tipped a corner onto the crossbar with Antoine Semenyo firing the rebound wide. The home crowd lifted. What followed emptied them.
Inside two minutes, Enzo Maresca’s side had effectively lost the game. On 13 minutes Fabián Ruiz switched a counter from midfield to the left; Désiré Doué bent a finish inside the far post past Gianluigi Donnarumma. Almost immediately Doué found Dembélé at the far post for 0-2. On 32 minutes Akliouche’s delivery from the right was laid off by Zaïre-Emery’s heel and Vitinha smashed in the third. Jeremy Doku’s late first-half effort was saved. City went in 3-0 down.
Maresca’s triple change at the break was inevitable. PSG switched off after the interval — and paid for it. Haaland headed in Iliman Ndiaye’s cross on 53 minutes. Semenyo thought he had another, ruled out for offside. City were roaring toward a full comeback until the 62nd minute, when Akliouche turned on the edge of the box and struck toward the far top corner from Dembélé’s pass. Donnarumma seemed to get a strong hand to it; the rebound still dropped over the line.
Even at 1-4, City kept creating. Haaland made it 2-4 on 75 minutes. Enzo Fernández hit the woodwork, Haaland struck the bar, Nuno Mendes cleared off the line from Joško Gvardiol — and that was before counting the unfinished chances Haaland and Semenyo both wasted. Late on, Matheus Nunes brought down Mendes as Ferran Torres looked to combine; Torres’ penalty toward the bottom right was weak and Donnarumma saved comfortably.
The holders took the points. On another night the scoreline could have finished almost anywhere.
Next: City host AEK Athens in Matchday 3 and Ipswich at home in the league; PSG visit Strasbourg, then host Barcelona in Europe.

Norwegian football is having a Champions League week. A night earlier Viking had drawn 3-3 with Bayern Munich. On Wednesday Bodø/Glimt took down another Bundesliga side — Dortmund beaten 1-0 away from home comforts in the Arctic.
The first half was tight and unfinished. Sondre Fet flashed wide on 19 minutes; Andreas Helmersen twice tested Gregor Kobel before the break. The goalkeeper kept Dortmund level.
The decisive moment arrived on 52 minutes. Sondre Auklend slipped a sharp ball into Fredrik Sjøvold, who finished low into the corner. One goal; three points.
Dortmund threw on the cavalry — Guirassy, Nmecha, Nwaneri, Ryerson among them — and piled forward. Nikita Haikin became the home hero, denying Felix Nmecha and Ethan Nwaneri again and again, including deep into stoppage time. Glimt held on with the organised home defence and cold-blooded finish that have become their European signature.

After the international break, Champions League nights returned for Shakhtar Donetsk — and this one carried a new chapter. Arda Turan’s side hosted AEK Athens at Chelsea’s Stamford Bridge, their first league-phase “home” fixture in London.
AEK arrived as newly crowned Greek champions under Marko Nikolić, already off the mark in Europe with a 1-0 win over LASK in September. Their 4-4-2 brings heavy press and danger from set pieces. Shakhtar felt both early: Moukoudi headed a Majer corner against the near post.
The Miners answered with progressive passes into the box and a long-range Alisson effort that did not change the scoreboard. On 28 minutes the visitors punished a mistake. Vinícius lost the ball trying to beat Koita on the right; Pilios drove past Marlon and Bondar and squared for Majer to finish into the far corner. 0-1.
Three minutes later Alisson’s trickery drew Relvas into a challenge; referee Chris Kavanagh pointed to the spot after the ball struck the defender’s arm. Pedrinho sent Brignoli the wrong way. 1-1. Pedrinho then rattled the bar from a tight left-side angle instead of crossing — Shakhtar were rising.
The second-half restart belonged to AEK. Riznyk first denied Pilios one-on-one, then tipped Marin’s free-kick out of the top corner. That kept Shakhtar alive long enough for the Greeks to tire. On 80 minutes Vinícius’s near-post drive from the right bamboozled Brignoli. Six minutes later Mendoza cut inside from the left and smashed into the far top corner — a finish that drew Willian comparisons among the Shakhtar diaspora in the stands. Stamford Bridge emptied quickly after that.
Next: Shakhtar visit Inter Milan; AEK travel to Manchester City.
