How to play blackjack

Blackjack rules for beginners: hand values, busting, doubling, splitting pairs, insurance, and dealer rules — plus sensible expectations online. 18+ only.

Blackjack is a house‑banked card game where you try to beat the dealer’s hand without going over 21. This page covers standard flow, common options (double, split, insurance), and what to check in the online rules panel. It is not a promise of profit or edge.

Objective and card values

You are not playing against other seated players — only against the dealer.

  • Cards 2–10 count at face value
  • J, Q, K count as 10
  • Ace counts as 11 when that keeps the total ≤ 21; otherwise it counts as 1

A “blackjack” (or “natural”) usually means an ace + a ten-value card on your first two cards. Rules for how naturals pay (e.g. 3:2 vs 6:5) differ by game — always read the paytable printed in help.

Flow of a typical round

  1. You place your bet.
  2. You receive two cards face up (in most online variants); the dealer takes cards according to that game’s script (one up / one down, etc.).
  3. You choose hit (draw) or stand (stop).
  4. If your total exceeds 21 you bust and lose immediately.
  5. When players finish, the dealer resolves their hand according to fixed dealer rules.

Dealer behaviour is never negotiable mid-hand: what you usually verify in help:

  • draws to 16, stands on 17 — but watch for “soft 17”: some games force the dealer to hit soft 17, which changes totals and optimal player strategy.

Doubling down

Doubling means you increase your wager after the first two cards (rules vary — sometimes only on 9–11, sometimes more) and agree to receive exactly one more card.

If doubling is unclear in a variant, assume it is restricted until you have read Double rules line-by-line.

Splitting pairs

When your first two cards are a pair, you may split into two hands for an additional wager matching your initial bet. Typical restrictions:

  • Aces: often one card each after split
  • doubling after split — sometimes disallowed

Again: this is spelled out inside the lobby’s rule sheet — do not infer from another brand’s blackjack.

Insurance and side bets

Insurance is offered when the dealer’s upcard is an ace. It is a separate small wager on whether the dealer has blackjack.

For most casual players insurance is mathematically weaker than declining it — serious players rely on maths tables for their variant, not guesses.

Casino-backed side bets (pairs, 21+3, etc.) usually carry a higher house edge than the main game. Read each side bet’s odds before opting in.

Online checklist

Before you tap Deal:

  1. Confirm natural blackjack payout (3:2 vs worse).
  2. Confirm dealer stands/hits soft 17.
  3. Confirm split and double permissions.
